On your question about getting yeast to sporulate more...

I frequently get Sacharomyces spp. yeast to sporulate at a high rate  
by reducing availabilty of one of the essential growth parameters  
(like carbon source, pH etc.) needed by yeast. For example if you  
slowly decrease the pH of the growth media that you grow the yeast in  
they will sporulate.
