Postdoctoral Research Associates in Molecular Mycology (Two posts) (vacancy
ref. 11226)
___________________________________________
Two post-doctoral researchers and a technician will shortly be required for
a new Glaxo Smith-Kline funded project investigating secondary metabolism
within a basidiomycete fungus. These posts will be within the Molecular
Plant Pathology and Mycology laboratory led by Professor Gary Foster and Dr
Andy Bailey in the School of Biological Sciences, University of Bristol (RAE
grade 5).
The first postdoctoral researcher will initially be responsible for
establishing a transformation system and devising genetic manipulation
techniques within this uncharacterised basidiomycete. The second
postdoctoral researcher will initially be responsible for isolation and
characterisation of the various genes believed to be important either for
the synthesis of metabolites of interest, or for pathways that may modify
yield of particular compounds.
Both postdoctoral workers and the supporting technician will then be
involved in the generation of transgenic lines with targeted alterations of
specific genes, followed by detailed molecular, physiological and biological
analysis.
You should have a proven track record in molecular genetics with a PhD in a
relevant biological field. Experience in fungal transformation (post 1) and
genomic library construction (post 2) would be expected. The projects are to
be carried out are in an exciting and challenging area within a highly
competitive field and will demand a high degree of commitment.
You must be highly motivated, be organised and have excellent communication
skills, both verbal and written. You must be able to work as part of a team
and both posts will involve some supervision of support staff and also of
students. Perhaps most importantly you must have the ability to drive the
project forward.
The technical appointment (to be advertised shortly) will be responsible for
providing assistance to the above researchers and will have skills in
microbiology/molecular biology.
There will be regular meetings with colleagues from GSK and this may require
occasional periods away from Bristol including overnight stays.
