How does a cell measure its size?

I'm a student in cell biology. We learned in class that cell size is
one of the factors checked before a cell can begin S phase and that the
window of cell sizes which allows S initiation is very narrow. All the
other factors mentioned such as nutrient or cdk concentration could be
measured locally. But how does a cell know how large it is?

thanks,

kesten
