A postdoctoral position is available to study the mechanism and regulation
of magnesium transport in mammals. We have cloned the Mg transporters
from yeast (MacDiarmid and Gardner, J Biol Chem 273:1727 1998) and are
using a Mg-deficient yeast strain to isolate mammalian transporters. The
position will involve investigating the transport capabilities of these
novel proteins in yeast, oocytes and mammalian cells, as well as analysis
of the expression and regulation of the genes. The applicant will be
expected to have a background in analysis of transporters and/or in
analysis of gene expression or function.

The applicant will be based in well-equipped laboratories at the School of
Biological Sciences, University of Auckland, under the joint supervision
of Professor Garth Cooper and Associate Professor Richard Gardner (see
website at http://www.sbs.auckland.ac.nz). The University is located near
downtown Auckland (population 750,000), within easy reach of the ocean,
beaches and forest, and 4 hours drive from mountain skiing.

Please send cv to Richard Gardner (r.gardner at auckland.ac.nz). The
position is for 2 years, commencing May 1 1998, and pays NZ$44,500-48,000
depending on experience.
