CAN1 encodes an arginine permease which when absent prevents cells from
uptaking the arginine analog canavanine. CAN1 cells grown in media
lacking arginine and containing canavanine (60 microg/ml) incorporate
the analog into proteins and die. can1 mutants can't take-up canavanine
and are therefore resistant. I don't know what the actual can1-100
mutation is.
