MOLECULAR & CELLULAR BIOLOGY OF S. POMBE & OTHER YEASTS

November 6 - 19, 1996

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 15th July 1996

Tom Chappell, University College London, UK
Paul Young, Queen's College, Canada

Fission yeast is often chosen as a model system for studies of cell and
molecular biology. This course is designed to introduce the basic
genetic, molecular and cell biological techniques necessary for an
investigator to adapt this system to their own laboratory/project.
Topics include formal genetics and tetrad dissection, cytology including
fluorescent and immunological techniques, transformation and gene
replacement, plasmid recovery and cell fractionation. Many of the
experiments will exploit mutant strains affected in cell cycle or
cytoskeleton. Against this background it is planned to introduce
several other yeast systems of industrial or pathological interest. The
Pichia system will be used for protein expression, Yarrowia for cell
fractionation studies and Candida for hyphal transformation. In
addition to the laboratory component, invited speakers will address
various aspects of the biology of these systems.

Information about our courses and meetings and how to apply for this
course, fees, scholarships, how to get to Cold Spring Harbor etc, is
