                                      POST-DOCTORAL POSITION
                                 IN MOLECULAR YEAST GENETICS

A post-doctoral position is available at the Department of Microbiology,
University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.  Research centers on the 
heterologous expression and characterization of (1) hemicellulose-degrading 
enzymes and (2) animal viral proteins in yeast as the eucaryotic host, and 
comprises fundamental and applied aspects.  The position is available for an 
initial period of 2 years but extension can be considered upon satisfactory 
progress.  It is principally a research position with the minimum of teaching 
(only at postgraduate level) required. Excellent research facilities are 
available in the Department which, together with large post-graduate research 
teams and international collaboration, provide an optimum environment to 
conduct research of a high international standard.  The annual remuneration is 
equivalent to that of a lecturer, with an addition once-off benefit of a 
settlement allowance on arrival from abroad, and without most of the teaching 
responsibilities.  The position has to be filled before December 1996.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, 
Biochemistry or related research field and must have demonstrated abilities to 
conduct creative research independently.  Expertize in yeast/fungal molecular 
genetics and protein biochemistry is desirable.  Qualified individuals are
