I wish to thank all the collaborators--Megan Brown, Susan Forsburg and
others who wish to remain anonymous.  This is  a collective product
effort. and it has been reviewed by highly competent individuals.    The
first ten respondants ,regardless of university,  are to kindly asked to
respond not only to the questionnaire, but to add a brief statement of
satisfaction or comment at the end.  Should you prefer, a mac microsoft
word v. 6.01 in rft has been attached to this post.

 I will request that Serge Taylor make a special effort to be sure that
this questionnaire is posted.

The next steps:
1. Selection of the Universities: (those that been suggested)
	MIT, UCBerkeley, UCLA,Duke. Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison Campus,
University of Washington (St Louis), and University of Chicago.

2. If agreement can be reached on these universities, I will ask that a
Ph.D. alumnus of each university act as contact.  Additionally, I will
write the Dean of the Graduate School or other appropriate person ,
present the Questionnaire, and ask for assistance in tracking the Ph.D.s
in Biology within  the years 1987-1992.Contact  will be made with the
assistance of the Ph.D. graduate contact person and by mail or e mail.
Megan Brown and I will subsidize the snail mail cost.

3. The collaborators who drew up the survey, will perform the analysis,
write the presentation and publish.    Non electronic publication will be
sought.    Additionally the results will be posted on both the List and on
Susan' Launch Page.

We strongly urge all member of the list even if  they have not completed
the Ph.D, or are not a graduate of the specified universities to complete
the survey.   These responses (confidential) will be placed in a
invididual  folder and analyzed separately and compared to the University
results.  Please indicate that you are a member of the list communty at
the top of the questionnaire.   This questionnaire is designed to elicit
rich and full answers from both genders.  These answers will in many cases
not agree with the general statistical data from NSF.   Your answers
potentially will reveal the unique "culture" of science and the barriers
that impact entry and maintenance of careers/

Career Decisions: A Snapshot Of Ph.D.s in Biology from three selected
Universities who received their degrees between 1987 and 1992

Purpose: To obtain data on the career choices made by recent biology Ph.D.s.

Authors: This survey is a joint effort among interested participants in a
Bionet USENET newsgroup. Lead author is Mary Ann Sesma. Ms. Sesma is a
Secondary Principal (retired). Other contributors include scientists at
several levels and of several occupations.

Results: Survey results may be published, and illustrative quotations from
individuals may be included (but will remain anonymous) The reasons "why"
behind the statistics provide a level of understanding that cannot be
obtained using numbers alone. All questionnaires will be confidential and
assigned random number codes for data compilation.

Directions: Copy the questionnaire with additional space as needed,
answer, and return to msesma at bell.k12.ca.us (preferred) or SESMA at aol.com.

upon request by post card to Mrs. Sesma at the above address.
