The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the School of Public Health,
University at Albany (SUNY) has a really good summer research program.
program (Research Experience for Undergraduates) is an NSF-funded
where students work in the labs of faculty member of the department, many
whom are researchers at New York's Wadsworth Center. This research
is booming with top-notch basic scientists in diverse fields, as well as
scientists working on problems of public health, including infectious
diseases and environmental impacts on health.
The program is competitive but
supplies travel reimbursement, lodging, food allowance and a modest
In addition to the research, students take part in weekly discussion
various aspects of choosing science as a career. Previous topics include
discussions of choosing graduate programs, scientific misconduct and
women and minoritites in science, coping with a career as a scientist and
being a good parent, etc.
