             Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia
             Tech) invites nominations and applications for the position of
             Provost.

             Virginia Tech is the senior land-grant university in the
             Commonwealth of Virginia. Located in Blacksburg between the
             Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains southwest of Roanoke, the
             University enrolls approximately 23,000 students on the
             Blacksburg campus and 2,000 students off-campus in nine
             colleges. These include Agriculture and Life Sciences,
             Architecture & Urban Studies, Arts & Sciences, Business,
             Education, Engineering, Forestry & Wildlife Resources, Human
             Resources, and Veterinary Medicine. Annual research
             expenditures exceed $131 million.

             The Provost, the chief academic officer of the University,
             reports to the President, supervises the University's
             instructional, research and extension programs, the graduate
             school, information systems, student affairs, and a number of
             academic support offices, and is responsible for developing
             the academic budget, for allocating and managing academic
             resources, for developing long-range plans, and for liaison
             with the State Council of Higher Education. The Provost also
             plays a major role in the governance of the University, in
             curricular development, and in the selection, promotion, and
             approval for tenure of the faculty. The University seeks
             candidates with records of high academic accomplishment,
             dedication to high quality undergraduate and graduate
             instruction, proven major administrative capabilities, and
             evidence of a commitment to the principles of diversity.
             Letters of application should include a curriculum vitae, and
             the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least three
             references. Review of applications will begin on August 15,
             1994; however, nominations and applications may be received
             until a candidate is appointed. Correspondence should be
