I have heard a story that an eminent British scientist of the early
part of this century was wont to take an afternoon a week to go
gardening for a wealthy employer (who was unaware of his identity). If
my memory serves me correctly, it was Sir Lawrence Bragg, a physicist
and Nobel Laureate, who considered that the time spent gardening was
well worth the opportunity to consider and reflect. It also
supplemented his income.
