Cultural Influences on Women's Role in Science:

I am a reporter with Science magazine, and am preparing
an article on how the cultural norms of different societies
around the world influence the scientific careers of women in
those cultures. My query is two-fold. I am seeking information
about any research done by social scientists on the subject of
how various national cultures influence women's roles in science,
and would like to receive suggestions of key researchers to talk to.
Second, I am looking for women who have pursued scientific careers
in countries other than the United States, who are willing to share
their experience and impressions of how influences in their culture
served to shape their experience. I am most interested in women who
have practiced their careers in two cultures, and who can compare
and contrast the cultural influences that shaped their experiences.

If you have any information to offer, or experiences to share, please
respond to my Internet address: barinaga at netcom.com

I would also appreciate it if anyone with access to other
relevent computer networks would do me the favor of circulating this
on those networks as well, so that I may reach the largest number
of women possible. Thanks to all respondents in advance,

Marcia Barinaga

P.S. Last year when we were preparing a special news section on women
in science, I placed a query on the internet bulletin boards and
received many helpful responses that served as material for my
story, either directly or indirectly. I had far too many responses
to reply to individually, but I would like to thank everyone who
responded last year. I hope to receive as many useful responses
again this time.
