protein page lane width

Dear All,
you know when you run a protein PAGE and the width of some gel
lanes gets very narrow (like 2mm when the width of the well was 1cm) - is
this caused by too much salt in the sample? Or are their other causes?
And is there a citable paper on this phenomenon (like there is for PEG
slowing down the migration of proteins in PAGE). Thanks for your help,
Mike.
