Schiff bases are unstable - you must reduce to form stable bonds. After reduction you simply dialyze away any unused reductant (and unconjugated ligand). And boron is not that toxic - I seem to recall eyedrops that were borax solutions!!! And my eyesight is pretty good.... Keld.
