Smith-Waterman Reference

I am looking for a published reference to the
Smith-Waterman sequence matching algorithm -
and reasons why it is a preferred technique.

(I am not in this field.  I should be grateful
for information as to strengths and weaknesses
of alternative or complementary algorithms).
