REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group rec.gardens.cacti
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of the
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup rec.gardens.cacti. This is
not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.
rec.gardens.cacti All about Cacti and Succulents plants.
There is a need for a news group where people all over the world can
exchange information about Cacti and Succulents. Over 2500 species of
Cacti and 7500 species of Succulents originate mostly from the
Americas and Africa but are now cultivated in almost every countries.
The rec.gardens.cacti group is currently active but not distributed
world-wide in USENET because its original creation process failed
back in 1998. We feel that its new creation will help reach a
greater audience of Cacti and Succulents enthusiasts around the
world and allow knowledge sharing among botanists, collectors,
nurseries and scientists.
A search on Google groups from 07-29-01 to 10-28-01 produced 1844
results(excluding rec.gardens.cacti) for an average of 20.3 postings
per day related to Cacti:
A search on Google groups from 07-29-01 to 10-28-01 produced 1164
results(excluding rec.gardens.cacti) for an average of 12.8 postings
per day related to Succulents:
There are about 50 Yahoo groups related to Cacti and Succulents.
Cacti and Succulents are also very popular among French and Spanish
rec.gardens.cacti is intended to be an unmoderated forum for cacti &
succulents enthusiasts to exchange information concerning
cultivation, propagation, events and trade concerning cacti and
All topics for discussion relevant to Cacti and Succulents are
appropriate and would include, (but not limited to):
- Plant identification
- How cacti & succulents have evolved
- Climatic conditions that make cacti & succulents thrive
- International trade
- Diseases and parasites
The primary languages of rec.gardens.cacti will be are English,
French and Spanish. Posting in other languages will be allowed, and
we encourage translations into one or all of the primary languages
for the benefit of the users of USENET.
The rec.gardens.cacti charter will be translated in the primary
languages and posted monthly in rec.gardens.cacti.
The rec.gardens.cacti FAQ will be translated in the primary
languages and posted monthly in rec.gardens.cacti and news.answers.
This group will be unmoderated. Flame wars and bad language are
strongly discouraged. No posting in HTML, with binaries,
attachments, spam or commercial ads will be accepted. Pictures will
have to be sent to alt.binaries.pictures.gardens for plant
This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this
phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed
newsgroups should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will
continue for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD
for this proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which
a Call For Votes (CFV) will be posted by a neutral vote taker.
Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.
All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.
