Phoenix dactylifera is relatively cold hardy so far as palms go. They will
withstand a short term freeze (only two to three days below 0 degrees
celsius). Plant in 100% sand with good to excessive drainage, full sun 12
hours a day, and supplement with magnesium. To protect during colder
weather you can cover them with a tent made from blankets, cardboard sheets,
or "foamcore" boards on the coldest nights, and heat with light bulbs or a
"smudge pot". (Outdoor kerosene heater).
