Lotus - Family Leguminosae (subfamily Faboideae) Perhaps 100 species of
herbs and subshrubs of mostly temperate regions. Leaves alternate,
odd-pinate; flowers in axillary umbels or sometimes solitary,
papilionaceous, keel beaked, stamens 10, 9 united and 1 separate; fr. a
narrow dehiscent legume.
Water Lilly - Family Nympaeaceae. Most familiar species belong to genus
Nymphaea, but also includes Euryale and Victoria (giant leaves), Nelumbo
(peltate leaves that stand above the water), and Nuphar (includes cow lily
Nelumbo and some species of Nymphaea are sometimes sold under the
taxonomically incorrect name "lotus".
