A Postgraduate Studentship is available, for UK based applicants, to work
with Professor J M Dunwell under the title "Manipulation of Oxalate in
Relation to Cell Wall Composition". The project is funded as a BBSRC
Special CASE award on "Raw Material Quality" and is in collaboration with
the nearby ZENECA plc. The studentship allowance is the standard BBSRC
rate enhanced by œ2,355 p.a.

The project will investigate the role of one of the major biochemical
components of plant cell walls, namely the intriguing role of oxalate in
determining the composition of the wall. Apart from the known facts that
i). oxalate oxidase is present in high amounts in the cell wall of
developing cereals wall and ii). many other plants have related proteins,
it is surprising that almost no other information is available.

The student will be involved in modifying the levels of endogenous oxalate
by the expression of oxalate degrading transgenic enzymes, and so will
have the opportunity to develop unique information on the link between
oxalate and wall composition.

It might be noted that any such understanding might lead to derived
improvements in wall quality, for example in the digestibility of the
transgenic crops produced, which would be of great significance in terms
of the potential wide use of such material for animal nutrition, bioenergy
and/or fermentation for "fine" chemical production.

The School of Plant Sciences, of which The Department of Agricultural
Botany is a part, received the highest rating (5*) for research excellence
in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. We are, therefore, looking
for highly motivated, academically able students to participate in the
above 3 year PhD projects. Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a
1st or 2i degree (or equivalent).

If you require more details please contact Professor Dunwell at: Tel 0118
