the fleshy outer layer of the seed is indeed malodorous due to a substance
similar to butyric acid...which gives off the odor of rancid butter.  The
seed though, is considered a delicacy when roasted.  Incidentally, the
Gingo biloba is the only remaining species of Gingo still in existance
