Cocos seedlings

Fri Apr 29 09:31:18 EST 1994

To sprout a coconut, lay it horizontally in a larg pot (12 inches or more
across) of moist sand, in a greenhouse. It should germinate within 2 months
(half that time if you're lucky).

A husked coconut reveals three dots at one end. Two will be recessed a bit,
and one will not be as indented. The less indented one is where the sprout
will emerge.

Dr. Darlene DeMason at UC Riverside is an authority on palm germination.
Her phone number is (714) 787-3580. She has shown me several coconut
seedlings she started from supermarket stock.
