April 15,16,17, 1994 (Friday - Sunday) 8-5 Friday and Saturday, 1-5
Sunday.  The Men's Garden Club of Wake County annual azalea sale. The NC
State Fairgrounds Gardens, Raleigh, NC.

April 16 (Saturday) The Piedmont Chapter of The American Rock Garden
Society Plant Sale. The NC State Fairgrounds Gardens, Raleigh, NC. Held
in conjunction with The Men's Garden Club of Wake County azalea sale.

April 16 and 17, 1994 (Saturday and Sunday) Pi Alapha Xi plant sale at
The NCSU Arboretum 9 am-4 pm Saturday and 10 am-3 pm Sunday.  PAX,!the
honor society in Horticultural Science at NCSU, will be holding their
annual plant sale at the Arboretum.  This organization uses the proceeds
to help support the NCSU Department of Horticultural Science in some of
the research, teaching, extension and outreach projects.  The NCSU
Arboretum is not selling plants.

April 23 and 24 (Saturday and Sunday) The Oakwood Garden Club Tour. 
Historic Oakwood is a late 19th century and early 20th century
residential neighborhood in downtown Raleigh, NC.  It contains restored
Victorian and other historic architecture and gardens.  Tickets are $5.00

April 25, 1994 (Monday) NCSU Horticultural Science Department Seminar -
"The Development of the NC Arboretum" by Mr. George Briggs, director of
The NC Arboretum.  See and hear the story of the massive development
program occuring near Asheville to produce a public garden which is
estimated to host over one million visisitors when it opens for public in
1995.  In the next year over four million dollars will be spent on the
construction of one garden.  Lecture at 3:30 PM in 159 Kilgore Hall, NCSU
Campus, Raleigh NC.

April 27 (Wednesday) - Friends of The NCSU Arboretum Lecture.
!The North!Carolina State Fair - The First Fifteen Years!.  Tony Avent
left the position as manager of The NC!State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC. 
During his tenure he collected a wide range of plants and built gardens
that are the envy of many horticulturists throughout the country.  See
Tony weave the tale of building and maintaining these fantastic gardens.

May 1, 1994 (Sunday) GALA IN THE GARDEN. May Day Celebration at The NCSU

May 7, 1994 (Saturday) Botanicals in Miniature Workshop. 9 am-12:30 pm. 
Registration $ 30.00.  Artist Sue Aldworth and assistant Suzanne Edney
will hold a 3 hour workshop to demonstrate the technique of painting
plants in miniature.  Ms. Aldworth has a degree in horticulture, in
addition to a Bachelor of Arts in fine art.  Ms. Edney is a landscape
designer and long time Arboretum volunteer.  Please call 919-515-3132 to
reserve your space in this workshop before you send in the registration
fee as there is a materials list to mail.  We want you to have this list
in time to purchase the needed supplies.  We would like to have you
registered by April 25th.

May 17, 1994 (Tuesday) - Landscape Contractors Field Day at The NCSU
Arboretum.  This workday is open to any landscape contractor, nurserymen
or other professional involved in the green industry.  For more

May 18, 1994 (Wednesday) - Landscape and Turf Grass Field Day at the
Horticulture Field Laboratory (Arboretum location) and NCSU Faculty Club

May 19, 1994 (Thursday) Propagating and Designing with Perennials
Workshop.  9 am-3 pm.  Registration $50.00.  This workshop will be held
by Edith Eddleman, landscape designer and curator of The NCSU Arboretum
perennial border and Doug Ruhren, co-curator of the perennial border and
gardener at Montrose Nursery.  Mr. Ruhren will spend the morning
discussing and demonstrating the art of propagation of perennials.  In
the afternoon Ms. Eddleman will talk about her design philosophy and how
to use perennials in design.  Using The NCSU Arboretum's perennial border
that is designed and maintained by Ms. Eddleman and Mr. Ruhren, they will
demonstrate how to use perennials for the best advantage in the

July 12, 1994 (Tuesday) - Annual Friends of The NCSU Arboretum Potluck
Picnic at The NCSU Arboretum.  Bring a dish for a pot-luck dinner,
folding chair or blanket, any extra plants you would like to contribute
to a plant swap.  Dinner at 7:00PM and a slide show of the annual plant
highlights when it gets dark.  Open to any member of The Friends of The
NCSU Arboretum.  If you are not a member you can join at this event.

During the 1993 Arboretum tour of Germany, participants were emphatic
about the need for future trips, and others have asked when and where the
next tour will go.  Led by J. C. Raulston, we will tour commercial
nurseries, public and private gardens, and natural features of the
Pacific Northwest from Oregon into British Columbia.  Prices and details
available later in spring - but if interested you can reserve the dates
now on your calendar.  Plan to bring notebooks, bushels of film and wear
running shoes!
