The University of Maryland announces the creation of a unique position
for a Controlled Environment Specialist to manage all of the controlled
environment facilities in the new $40 Million Plant Sciences Building 
on the College Park campus.  The building houses the Departments of
Natural Resource Sciences and Landscape Architecture (formerly Agronomy
and Horticulture), Entomology, and the Center for Agricultural
Biotechnology.  It contains a shared growth chamber facility with 35
chambers (10 walk-in and 25 reach-in chambers), an aseptic plant tissue
culture room, seed germination and storage rooms, insect rearing and
insect-host plant interaction rooms, controlled atmosphere storage and
low temperature dormancy induction rooms.  Eventually, the person in
this position may also be involved in the management of the controlled
environment greenhouse, which will contain a $10 Million Environmental
Simulator. This facility is scheduled for completion in the year 2000.

Applicants should have a BS or MS degree and/or equivalent experience in
Agricultural or Mechanical Engineering, Plant Biology, Entomology,
Horticulture or Agronomy.  The successful candidate should have some
familiarity with both plant growth in controlled environments and the
engineering aspects of growth chamber and greenhouse design.  Knowledge
of systems integration, networking, and computerized monitoring and
control are considered essential for this position.

The position will be funded jointly by the College of Agriculture and
Natural Resources, the College of Life Sciences, and the University of
Maryland Biotechnology Institute.  This is a non-tenure track Associate
Staff position and is a 12 month appointment with full benefits. Please
