PLANT MOLECULAR GENETICS

A one-year postdoctoral position is available at the department of Forest
Genetics and Plant Physiology at the Swedish University of Agricultural
Sciences in Umeå, Sweden. The fellowship is tax-free and will amount to
12,000-14,000 SEK per month depending on experience. The closing date of
application is the 15th March 2000.
In collaboration with breeders a project is under way to evaluate the
possible integration of molecular markers in selection. We have developed
genetic maps of Pinus sylvestris using AFLP markers to locate QTLs for
several economically important traits in Sweden. Two very large full-sib
families are studied. Since the first study carried out on a part of this
material is encouraging we are planning to enlarge the sample size. The
experiments will be done on an automatic sequencer making the analysis
easier. We are also planning to add to the existing maps, genes and ESTs
from P. sylvestris and related species. They will be used to make bridges
between maps from different crosses and to compare QTL location.
The applicant should have a PhD in genetics or in molecular biology.
Previous experience in genome and QTL mapping and skills in statistics are
required. Experience in working with AFLPs on automatic sequencers is a
plus. The applicant should demonstrate command of written and spoken English
and should be capable of independent work. Applicants who have taken their
doctor's degree during the last three years should be given preference.
