Hello People of bionet.molbio.gene-linkage,

We received a message in our E-Mail that would better be answered most likely by
someone in this group (atleast I hope). Please respond to her since I do not
know if she reads the newsgroups.

Thank you,

Dear Sir or Madam,
I wonder if you could give me some advice on linkage analysis - in the dog rather
than the human 'though. I am about to take up a position in Dr. Elaine
Ostrander's laboratory at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute in
Seattle where my job will involve determining the order and spacing of canine
microsatellite markers which have been putatively assigned to the same chromosomes
using canine/rodent hybrid cell lines (there are < 10 markers in each group).
Although I am familiar with the concepts of linkage analysis I am a newcomer to
the practical details of actually performing linkage analysis experiments and as
there is no one in my new lab particularly experienced in this field either I am
trying to gather information before I get there.
I will have access to 70 individuals from four families with which to do the
linkage analysis and as far as I know there are just two generations available. I
wonder if you could me any advice as to the most suitable / appropriate programmes
to use for this type of analysis, given the families I have available? Another
(trivial) consideration for me is that to date virtually all my computing
experience is on the Macintosh so if I could use a programme which I could run on
the Mac I'd be very happy, altho' I know this should only be a minor
consideration!
I will be extremely appreciative of any help or advice you have the time to give
me and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Cathryn Mellersh (PhD)
