You could try playing with the -O, -cg and -misalign switches (these are my personal favorites!),
try compiling with -O1. I have experienced similar problems with v5.1 on occasion
and also with Sun f77 when linking with the NAG libraries. In each case fiddling with various switches
did the trick!
