Research Technician position  (reference MBP00809)

The Tauber lab at the University of Leicester wishes to employ a
research technician on a BBSRC funded research project, entitled
“Genetic dissection of seasonal timing in Drosophila”. This is a Grade
5 position, Salary - £19,606 to £20,172 per annum (3 years). You will
provide direct technical support in carrying various molecular biology
techniques, phenotypic screens of transgenic Drosophila strains, and
breeding and maintenance of Drosophila stocks. You will also learn
multiple techniques (e.g. bioinformatic analysis), as well as ensuring
that the laboratory is well maintained and stocked. Other duties will
include electrical equipment testing, waste management, making up
solutions and preparing materials for experiments.

You may have the opportunity to register for a PhD if appropriate.

Responsibilities:

- Contribute as a team member by assisting the research fellow in
their research
- Analyse and prepare reports of data generated to PIs and fellow
- Undertake cloning, PCR (polymerase chain reaction), RT (reverse
transcription)
- Prepare biochemical reagents for use in experimental procedures
- Carry out Drosophila crosses and stock maintenance
- Oversee stock control and purchase of laboratory reagents and other
consumable items using intranet ordering system.
- Undertake the safe disposal of bio-waste and liquid waste to
appropriate storage sites
- Carry out general laboratory maintenance and support, maintaining
good laboratory practice and housekeeping
- Undertake health and safety responsibilities with the Principal
Investigator and Laboratory Manager, maintaining safety equipment and
emergency spillage equipment in the laboratory, MSDS, Safety Manual,
Risk Assessment Records, Accident Record Book and First Aid box
- Perform independent presentation of results to PIs and research
fellow at regular single and joint meetings
