I am not an entomologist-just a plain homeowner (chemist by degree). I
captured a very, large, approximately 1 inch by 3/4 wide fly, completely
dull black at my home in Lake County (Northern Suburb of Illinois). In
all my years I've never seen one so big. My neighbor who is familiar with
deerflies said it is much to big to be one in his experience and I believe
it is too large for a horse fly. Anyone out there know what it may be?
