Jazz artist pioneers biochemical genetics?

Sorry to use band-width for the following, but yesterday I posted a message
containing the following lines:

'In "Lords of the Fly: Drosophila Genetics and the Experimental Life" ...,
Robert E. Kohler describes George Beadle's first encounter with the highly
non-collegial world of research biochemistry. While guiding Arthur Tatum's
early work on eye-pigments,...'

Obviously, Edward Tatum pioneered biochemical genetics in Drosophila and
Neurospora: Art Tatum was playing the piano (with equal virtuosity).

Now, back to Drosophila....
