Extreme 2000: Voyage to the Deep

During the past eight weeks, outreach staff at the University of
Delaware College of Marine Studies and Sea Grant College Program have
been developing a special educational project -- "Extreme 2000: Voyage
to the Deep" -- to extend
our first deep-sea expedition of the millennium to the classroom.

The expedition, to hydrothermal vent sites in the Sea of Cortes off the
west coast of Mexico, from Jan. 12-22, will be led by chief scientist
Craig Cary from the University of Delaware and include scientists from
the University of Delaware, Portland State University, Molecular
Dynamics Inc., Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Monterey Bay
Aquarium Research Institute, the National Science Foundation, the
University of British Columbia, and the Univ. Nacional Autonomia de

With financial support from the National Science Foundation, the UD
College of Marine Studies and Public Broadcasting Station WHYY-TV in
Wilmington/Philadelphia have developed an educational resource package
for Delaware middle- and high-school students, including a full-color
resource guide on the deep sea, a complementary video for classroom use,
and an interactive Web site: 


The first dive of the Extreme 2000 mission will be Thursday, Jan. 13. 
At 1:30 p.m. EST that day, we'll be hosting a call between Dr. Cary as
he is working in Alvin on the seafloor and 12 classrooms (primarily from
