The First International Symposium on Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents Biology is
under the auspices of InterRidge following a recommendation by the
InterRidge Biological Studies Ad Hoc
Committee. The object of this Symposium is to bring together the
international community of scientists
involved in research on deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps and to
provide a forum for presentation
of results in the following topics:

Oral presentations will be allotted 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes for

A half-day excursion may be scheduled mid-week depending on the number of

distance from the Conference Center. Average price per meal per person in
Madeira is USD 10.00 (lunch) and USD 20.00 (dinner).
The new Marine Biological Station of Funchal will be inaugurated officially
between 20 and 23 October (exact date not yet fixed). This event will take
place around 18:30 and all participants in the Symposium are kindly invited
by the Mayor of Funchal to take part in it.
Biology Teachers from local high schools will be invited to attend the
Symposium through the Education Department of the Museum. Their
participation will provide us with an excellent opportunity to disseminate
knowledge of deep-sea biology and import a sense of its value to the
community of Madeira.
WORKSHOP ON INTERRIDGE INTERNATIONAL SAMPLE EXCHANGE AGREEMENT
There will be an formal session one evening to discuss parts of the
InterRidge International Sample Exchange Agreement. This discussion will be
led by Lauren Mullineaux and Daniel Desbruy=E8res, co-chairs of the InterRid=
Biological Studies ad hoc working group.
TRAVEL and LODGING INFORMATION
Participants are encouraged to investigate flight + accommodation packages
offered by travel agents. These packages are often much less expensive than
booking flights and hotels separately, even taking into account group rates.

VERY IMPORTANT. Please be aware that October is a busy month in Madeira,
with numerous international conferences. The travel agency can only
guarantee hotel reservations made until April, 30.
A city map of Funchal and a map of the whole Island of Madeira along with
tourist information will be mailed to participants. Additional hotel
information (names and locations marked on Funchal map) will be included in
The new International Conference Center is located just outside the city
center. Public transport is available and arrangements will be made for a
shuttle service from a central point in the city center.
There will be a registration fee of 100 USD payable in advance by check,
money order or direct transfer. A reduced rate for students will be 50 USD.
Registration fees must be received in Madeira by Friday, 23 May 1997.
Abstracts and registration forms will not be processed by InterRidge until

ABSTRACT VOLUME SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
An abstract volume will be compiled by the InterRidge Office for
distribution at the Symposium.
The abstract submission deadline is Friday, 23 May 1997. Abstracts may be
submitted to the InterRidge Office on diskette or by e-mail to
intridge at ext.jussieu.fr. Files should be in RTF format. Accompanying
figures may be submitted as originals or high quality reproductions by post.
Abstract length, including figures, should not exceed two A4 pages. All
abstract submissions will be acknowledged.
PLEASE NOTE: Registration forms and abstracts are to be sent to the
InterRidge Office (either by post or e-mail), Registration fees (if by check
or money order) are to be sent directly to Madeira.

The Symposium Proceedings will be published in a separate citable volume.
The Organizational Committee will act as editors for this publication. The
manuscript submission deadline will be 1 January 1998. Participants wishing
to contribute should indicate a provisional title on the Registration Form
below. A firm commitment to contribute a manuscript to the proceedings
volume must be given at the Symposium. A form will be available at
registration along with submission guide lines.
Participants wishing to receive the Symposium Proceedings Volume will be
asked to pay a reduced price of 25 USD.
