TEACHING WORKSHOPS/TEACHING POSTERS/UNDERGRADUATE DINNER MEETING AT THE 2005
INTERNATIONAL C. ELEGANS MEETING
The C. elegans Teaching Workshop Committee (Taylor Allen, Oberlin College,
Kirsten Crossgrove, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Caroline Goutte,
Amherst College, Jim Lissemore, John Carroll University, Rebecca Lyczak,
Ursinus College, Jennifer Miskowski, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Heather
Thieringer, Princeton University, Laura Vallier, Hofstra University) has
organized three teaching workshops, a teaching poster session, and a dinner
meeting for undergraduates for the 2005 International C. elegans Meeting.

UNDERGRADUATE DINNER MEETING (DE NEVE PLAZA COMMONS, SAT. JUNE 25, 5-6:45 PM)
This informal meeting will provide a chance for undergraduates to meet other
undergraduates and for faculty members, post-docs, and graduate students
interested in undergraduate education to meet one another. Tables will be
reserved at the De Neve Plaza Commons. Flyers will be posted at registration
and at the dining hall as reminders and the tables will be designated in some
TEACHING POSTER SESSSION (PAULEY PAVILION, SUNDAY JUNE 26, 2-3 PM)
Fourteen posters (see abstracts # 1325-1338) that describe the use of C.
elegans in teaching are grouped together and their authors will be asked to be
at their posters from 2-3 PM. Abstracts can be viewed at the meeting abstract

TEACHING WORKSHOP I (DE NEVE PLAZA ROOM, SUNDAY JUNE 26, 1-2 PM)
"WHAT IS LIFE LIKE AT A PREDOMINANTLY UNDERGRADUATE (I.E. TEACHING) INSTITUTION
AND HOW CAN I GET A JOB AT ONE?"
This workshop should be of interest to graduate students and postdocs who are
considering a career at a predominantly undergraduate institution (PUI). The
challenges facing faculty members at PUIs are substantially different from
those typically encountered at a research university and the job search process
is also quite different. Panelists will discuss issues such as teaching loads,
research expectations and opportunities, how to find PUI job openings, and
hiring criteria at PUIs.

TEACHING WORKSHOP II (DE NEVE PLAZA ROOM, MONDAY JUNE 27, 1-2 PM)
“MAINTAINING A RESEARCH PROGRAM AT A PREDOMINANTLY UNDERGRADUATE INSTITUTION
This workshop should be of interest to faculty members at PUIs and those
considering a career at a PUI. Faculty at most PUIs are encouraged/expected to
provide research experiences for undergraduates and many PUIs require
publications for tenure and promotion. The panelists will discuss issues such
as conducting research with undergraduates, mistakes to avoid, external and
internal funding sources, and grant administration.

TEACHING WORKSHOP III (DE NEVE PLAZA ROOM, TUESDAY JUNE 28, 1-3 PM)
“USING C. ELEGANS IN THE CLASSROOM AND TEACHING LABORATORY”
This workshop should be of interest to educators at all levels who wish to use
C. elegans to illustrate important biological principles. The presenters at
this workshop will cover a variety of topics, including the use of Internet
resources, bioinformatics, and RNAi, along with discussions of assessment of
student learning/scholarship of teaching and grants for course improvment.
