The WHO/TDR sponsored Filarial Genome Project has now deposited over 10,000
ESTs in Genbank.
These expressed sequence tags represent single pass sequence reads from
essentially randomly-picked cDNA clones. The clones come from a set of cDNA
libraries which span the filarial lifecycle: new additions to the libraries
* Adult female
* Second stage (mosquito-derived) larvae
* Third stage larvae
isolated 6 days after infection of the mammalian host
These libraries, and all others used in the project, are available from the
Filarial Genome Resource Center (genome at smith.edu).
We estimate that we have identified between 4 and 5,000 different genes by
this EST approach. In addition to identifying many homologues of genes with
immediate potential as drug targets or vaccine components, there is a vast
array of previously unidentified genes which have interesting expression
patterns (judged by their representation in different libraries) and
intriguing homologies. We believe this dataset should be of immediate
interest not only to filarial biologists, but also all others working on
parasitic nematodes and free-living models such as C. elegans.
All the clones are freely available from the sequencing labs (either
genome at smith.edu or mark.blaxter at ed.ac.uk).

The Filarial EST program is funded by WHO/TDR, the MRC and the Edna
McConnell Clark Foundation. The ESTs were generated by a collaboration
between the labs of K. Jayaraman (Madras, India), R. Ramzy (Cairo, Egypt),
S. Williams (Northampton, USA), B. Slatko (NEB, MA, USA), A. Scott (JHU,
Baltimore, USA), M. Blaxter (Edinburgh, Scotland) and S. Jones & L. Baron
