Swiss-Japanese Scientific Seminar

Progress in developmental biology:
Development of the nervous system and pattern formation

Sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the JSPS
with additional support by the Fondazione Monte Verità

Place: Centro Seminariale Fondazione Monte Verità
6612 Ascona, Switzerland

Date: 31. March 2000 to 3. April 2000

Organizers:	Thomas R. Bürglin, Yasushi Hiromi, Heinrich Reichert

The goal of the seminar is to bring together Japanese and Swiss
biologists who study related topics in Developmental Biology and
Neurobiology, and to foster information exchange and collaborations. The
seminar will cover two areas of develomental biology: development of the
nervous system and pattern formation. While pattern formation is often
studied not in the context of the nervous system, many molecular
processes play also important roles in the nervous system. Thus we
expect that the presentations on pattern formation will also lead to
relevant insights for the nervous system. Two particular aspects of
nervous system development that will be highlighted during the seminar
are brain development and development of the sensory nervous system,
such as eye and thermosensor development. The seminar is open to all
interested persons, and we particularly hope that students will also
