[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this posting.]

This session will explore the use of computational tools in
conjunction with metabolic pathways, developmental pathways,
signal-transduction pathways, genetic regulatory circuits, and other
biological pathways. Issues relevant to this session include
descriptions of pathway databases, pathway simulation techniques
(qualitative and quantitative), the design and feasibility estimation
of pathways for biotechnology, pathway visualization tools, pathway
estimation from sequence data, comparative analysis of pathways from
different organisms, pathway evolution, application of machine learning
to pathways, and ontologies for pathways. One goal of the session is
to foster interactions between the developers of a number of pathway
databases (see http://www.ai.sri.com/~pkarp/pathways.html), and
researchers who are developing techniques for analyzing biological

PSB'97 will publish accepted peer-reviewed full papers in an archival
proceedings. All full papers will be peer-reviewed by at least three
referees. Each accepted full paper will be allocated 12 pages in the
proceedings, and will be presented orally (30 minutes) at the

To be eligible for review and publication in the proceedings, each
full-paper submission must be accompanied by a cover letter stating
that it contains original unpublished results not currently under
consideration elsewhere and that all co-authors concur with its

Scientists who wish to participate in the session, but who do not wish
to submit a full paper, are welcome to submit a two page abstract,
which will be distributed at the meeting separately from the archival
proceedings. All participants are welcome to display posters and give
live computer demonstrations.

Five copies of all full papers should be submitted to:
      c/o Section on Medical Informatics
Stanford University Medical School, MSOB X215
      Stanford, CA 94305-5479 USA

Important dates:

Paper submission deadline: July 1, 1996
Notification of paper acceptances: August 22, 1996
Camera ready copy due: September 15, 1996
Conference: January 6-9, 1997 at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, Maui
