DNA polymerases (and RNA polymerases as well) polymerize nucleotides by 
addition of a phosphodiesterbond to the 3'OH group of the last nucleotide 
in the growing chain.  Since all polymerases function in this manner, 
there is probably a thermodynamic explanation of why polymerases don't 
add to the 5' phosphate group.
