"The PhD Process: A Student's Guide to Graduate School in the Sciences" by
Dale F. Bloom, Jonathan D. Karp, and Nicholas Cohen (Oxford U Press, 209
pp, paperback, $16.95).
I think this is a very good book and wrote an extended review and put it

In short, the authors have put together a "mentor-in-a-manual" for
graduate students. They don't shy away from the hazards. They do offer
good suggestions. And, they "tell-it-like-it-is."
