One of its uses is to de-hydrate the tissue. Usually from 70-100% and vice
versa. It can be looked at as being 0-30% water...if you get the idea. A
good reference is Ham & Fawcwtt - Histology or any basic histology text. For
more advanced use see technical manuals like the one from Boehringer M. on
in situ hybridization.
