Melioidosis is a potentially fatal bacterial disease caused by an
environmental saprophyte: Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) pseudomallei. The
disease is endemic in the area between 20?N and 20?S of the equator and is
particularly prevalent in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. However,
sporadic cases have been reported from all over the world, especially in
those who have visited the endemic areas. It is for this reason that we
have set up the Melioidosis forum in the web site, www.melioidosis.org,
here in Thailand, where the majority of cases have been reported. All of
you are invited to share information regarding Melioidosis issues in your
country. You can send information, either pictorially or in text, to me
