It's too bad only 10 could be listed.  I would certainly have included
Ignaz Semmelweiss (washing hands between patients), Florence Nightingale
(clean nursing conditions) and Joseph Lister (asepsis during surgery)
greatly reduced mortality from post-partum and post-operative infections.
