Sorry, this is not correct.  AvH fellowships are for non-German scholars
to work in Germany so that's impossible (i.e. Germans cannot be former AvH
fellows).  You can pretty much work anywhere you want as long as you have
a German sponsor.  They are also not limited to laboratory work and a
large number of AvH fellows also work in the humanities.  There is a
separate fellowship, called the Feodor Lynam (Sp?) Fellowship, for German
scholars to work outside of Germany and THOSE are limited to working with
former AvH fellows. 

In response to the original question, I seem to recall a new
Internationalesbegegnumzentrum (IBZ) being built in the Potsdam area but I
may be mistaken.  If there is, I would highly recommend trying to find
housing there.
