Hello my name is Morgan Lancaster and I am a 8th grader at Mendocino
Middle School. I doing a science project on Dolphins for school. My
investigative question is how the dolphins that are in kept in captivity
are trained to live and work in the human world. I don't know a lot about
this topic but what I do know is fairly general. I know that dolphins are
mammals and that they are trained with certain objects. I also know that
the trainers use certain objects to do this. If you are wondering about
why I don't know a lot about this topic it's because our library is
fairly small and doesn't have a lot of information on this particular
topic. If you don't know a lot about the subject yourself but can
recommend some articles for me to read that would be greatly appreciated.
To help me I came up with some questions that I feel might help me. For
example:
¥ What object(s) do the trainers use when they train them ? I know
that they use a whistle and a thing that looks like a giant Q-tip but I
don't know what they use them for.
¥ How long is the average training process ?
¥ When did dolphins first get used for entertainment proposes ?
¥ Has there been and scientific research on what the effects is
keeping a dolphin captive for a long period of time. For example it's
life span ?
¥ Are dolphins on the whole fairly shy animals ?
¥ Who captures them ? Where do they find them ? Do they select
certain ones ?
Any information anyone can give on this subject would be greatly
appreciated. You can reach me at : cwisnia at eis,calstate.edu Thank you
for your help.
