All bio-netters:
In the last year our company has completely overhauled our biosafety programs
to conform with Atomic Energy Commission's, OSHA's, EPA's, and any others
regulations. This has taken a huge effort and I have heard certain grumblings
that universities and other sites are undergoing this change.
In an effort to speed up some communications and certainly standardize
procedures, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta GA) has published a
government printing office document, "Biosafety in Microbiological and
Biomedical Laboratories". Except for postage and handling ($7.00 for a
177-page, softbound booklet), it is free and MAY BE COPIED because it has no
copyright and is a gov't document.
To help in the dissemination of this important manual, the CDC has sent me an
IBM text file (WordPerfect). My software support group has translated this to
a Microsoft Word document, and I am reformatting it for my Macintosh.
This document needs to find a home in a Gopher account as well as be available
to netters. Because of industrial security, we can not make it available
through my company by other than through e-mail. I am looking for a home for
this manual which can then be accessed by file transfer protocols.
Ftp's are new to me, so I am really at a loss on how to proceed. I can e-mail
the document (in pieces) to be made available or you can contact the CDC for
information. They have been very kind, but flooding them with individual
requests may bog things down a bit, so if you call for information make sure
that you can spread this document to many people rather than for your own
personal use. I hope you understand what I am saying.
Because it is such a huge document, I believe it could not be put in the FAQ.
But maybe I can get support for this from the bionet accounts.
A real added bonus is that we can save a hell of a lot of trees, and move this
information into the 20th century... nearly 21st.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
