I suspect that you would get more information from one of the computer
science newsgroups. GAs were suggested by biology, but find their home
in the colder climes of machine learning and optimization. The names of
some of the players in the GA game are John Holland, Steffanie Forrest and
Melanie Mitchell. Holland invented them and Forrest and Mitchell have pushed
them along significantly.
