Penn State maintains an E. coli strain collection which now numbers in
the several thousands. This collection was created to type the vast
number of "pathogenic" strains. While most E. coli are harmless, there
are many which are not. These strains are of medical and veterinary
importance. The Penn State collection is curated by Dr. Richard Wilson,
Dept. of Veterinary Science. The strains are maintained "live" and
extensive characterization is done to permit identification of new
outbreaks that seem to be E.coli related.
