>Arkansas has the dubious
>distinction of being one of the only states ever to pass a law requiring

1) AK is Alaska, AZ is Arizona. Arkansas is AR AR AR AR ARGGGGH!!!!
(This morning, someone else another list made the identical error.
I even had my Science subscription going to Arizona for a while because
someone there saw the AR, thought it was an error, and changed it to AZ.)

2) Clinton was NOT the governor who signed the bill. The gentleman with
that "dubious distinction" was Republican Frank White. That fiasco was
one of the things that led to his failing to be reelected. It's hard to
believe, but widely reported, that White never read the bill before
signing it.

I don't recall whether Clinton made any public pronouncements, but few
politicians from the more populous parts of the state were in favor of
the "creation science" bill. One of the interesting aspects of the case
was that our attorney general, who had the job of defending the bill, was
strongly against it; he held office much longer than White.
