Does anyone have a concise list for telnet & ftp addresses for various
bio databases. Also, if there is any documentation about use of each
please send these to my Bitnet address below or send the listserv address
from which I can retrieve them via EMail. The PACS-L interest group has
a convenient internet list of various online library catalog and data-
bases. Something like this would be very useful in the "Bio" world. I
have included it for those who may not have seen it.

Regards,
        Bill :-)

Introduction

Internet-Accessible Library Catalogs and Databases is coauthored by Dr. Art St.
George of the University of New Mexico and Dr. Ron Larsen of the University of
Maryland. Dr. St. George says this document "began as an effort to provide
additional service to the network community locally. However, it became
apparent that the library resources were of broader appeal than that."
It contains a listing of over 100 online library catalogs and databases
available within the United States and beyond. It contains listings of U.S. and
international library catalogs and databases, dial-up libraries, Campus-Wide
Online Information Systems, and bulletin board systems. Each listing gives a
brief description of the resource and instructions on how to access it, as well
as places to contact for more information. Listings include such material as
Columbia University's online library catalog (CLIO), PennsylvaniaUs State
University online card catalog system (PENpages), and the Colorado Alliance of
Research Libraries (CARL) and its 25 individual resource listings of libraries
and information databases, such as the Metro Denver Facts database.
This catalog is an ongoing project. If you have any suggestions,
comments, or additions, please send them to Dr. Art St. George by electronic
mail to stgeorge at unmb.bitnet or stgeorge at bootes.unm.edu.
This document was formatted by Karen McKelvey, California Education
and Research Federation Network (CERFnet) (karen at cerf.net).

GLADIS is public access and it does not require a password for access. The
catalog covers the holdings of most UCB libraries, including the main library,
the Moffitt Undergraduate Library, the Bancroft Library and some 23 branch
libraries. The catalog is complete for monographic holdings from 1977 to the
present and incomplete for monographic holdings prior to that date. We are in
the process of converting older monographic records, so more of these records
appear in the catalog daily. All of the serial titles, both past and present,
are re_ected in GLADIS. GLADIS also contains records for maps, manuscripts,
audiovisual materials and computer software. Circulation information (whether
an item is checked out or not) is available for some library locations (six
libraries as of September, 1989).

DATABASE: UnCover

This database contains records describing journals and their contents. Coverage
is rapidly growing as CARL member holdings are processed. UnCover will soon
include more than 10,000 titles, and descriptions of over 600,000 articles will
be generated each year. Articles can be retrieved individually or displayed as
the table of contents for any given journal issue.

Note: UnCover is restricted to use by the patrons of CARL's member
Libraries. Others may make special arrangements. Please send e-mail to:
uncover at carl.org or contact Rebecca Lenzini at (303)861-5319 for more
information.

contains approximately 220,000 bibliographic records for serials that were
coded c (current) in byte 6 of the 008 field. Update tapes containing new
records and changes are processed monthly. The records are cataloged using the
same indexing rules that are applied to the CARL bibliographic files.

LUIS (Library User Information Service) is the online catalog of the State
University System (SUS) libraries. LUIS runs on hardware belonging to the
NERDC. The software is maintained by the Florida Center for Library Automation
(FCLA), a SUS agency.

There are actually nine LUIS catalogs, one for each university. For each
library, the percentage of its collection searchable in LUIS is different and
is always changing. To find out what a library's LUIS catalog covers,
contact that library.

LUIS is available

7:30 a.m. - 1:00 a.m. Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m. Saturday
10:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m. Sunday

Logging On to LUIS from the Internet

Use a tn3270 version of telnet to connect to nervm.nerdc.ufl.edu over the
Internet. After reaching nervm, press enter to get past the VM logo screen. CP
READ will be displayed in the lower right corner. Type DIAL VTAM and press
enter. The screen will clear and the message NERDC VTAM IS ACTIVE will be
displayed.
