LDBASE and BIO-NAUT

Well BIONAUTS seems to be getting along like a house on fire. A
few days ago I ran LDBASE from FINLAND on the LISTSERV in IRELAND
and it seems to be working perfectly. For example I wanted to
check the "electronic resumes" of people from the USA so I entered
   the following command

db>search usa in bio+naut
Search started...
--> Database BIO+NAUT, 11 hits.

I came up with 11 hits. I then ran an INDEX to see who they were.

db>index
Item # Date Time Recs Subject
------ ---- ---- ---- -------
000004 90/04/26 14:43 21 Steve Kelley (USA)
000006 90/04/27 08:38 24 Lawrence Hunter (USA)
000015 90/04/27 09:40 22 index entry
000017 90/04/27 10:44 24 J. Michael Cherry (USA)
000023 90/04/27 11:37 18 Rainer K Sachs (USA)
000025 90/04/27 16:48 21 entry
000026 90/04/27 17:20 23 David Steffen (USA)
000027 90/04/27 17:47 20 FRED CRISCUOLO (USA)
000028 90/04/28 08:10 24 Bruce A. Roe (USA)
000030 90/04/28 18:06 21 ANDREW MENDELSOHN (USA)
000039 90/04/29 11:55 23 Patrick Powell (USA)

As you can see 2 out of 11 did not put their NAME and COUNTRY on
the Subject line, but instead wrote entry and index entry. However
I expect that the characters USA were found within the body of
their message to they got pulled out anyway. So I repeat again.
When entering your "electronic resume" put your NAME and COUNTRY
on the subject line of the message. And be specific when you
query the database, USA and U.S.A. will give different results.

I did the same for the UK and it produced the following results.

db>search UK in BIO+NAUT
Search started...
--> Database BIO+NAUT, 4 hits.
index
Item # Date Time Recs Subject
------ ---- ---- ---- -------
000008 90/04/27 08:36 22 MARTIN FARRALL (ENGLAND)
000011 90/04/27 09:53 22
000012 90/04/27 12:11 21 JOHN HANCOCK (UK)
000034 90/04/29 16:03 20 Rob Beynon (United Kingdom)

I have enjoyed reading the "electronic resumes" and I hope that
more people will continue to add information. If you want you can
run LDBASE on BIO+NAUT to see the "bionauts" from your country. You
can imagine that all the entries into BIO-NAUT go to make up a
"biological phone book" and at a later date you can query BIO-NAUT
list using LDBASE to find out "experts" on a particular topic.

For those of you who prefer to get their BIONAUT on USENET then
you should check out BIONET.USERS.ADDRESSES. At the moment entries
are running at about 8 new "electronic resumes" per day. So from
an activity point of view the list seems to be successful.

Best regards

Rob "bionaut" Harper
