Bionet newsgroups are mailing lists?

I'm posting for my sister (who has lousy Usenet access) regarding the bionet
newsgroups. It seems that these are really mailing lists which are also posted
to Usenet? I would be most grateful for any information regarding these mailing
lists, especially how one goes about subscribing to them.
