Michael Gribskov mentioned the LEEDS FEATURES DATABASE compiled by
John Wootton (the correct email address is WOOTTON at GOV.NIH.NLM.NCBI)
and Rachel Nicolson (RACHEL at UK.AC.LEEDS.BIOVAX) with data retrieval
software being written by myself (AJB at UK.AC.DARESBURY.DLVH).
The position with regard to availability of this database is a little
murky wrt intellectual property rights but this confusion should be
resolved shortly.
The database comprises 3 sections
a) Comment information
b) Discriminating 2-dimensional matrices describing each feature which
can be used to scan a single sequence or a database.
c) Hit lists found by scanning the OWL non-redundant protein sequence
database with the matrices.
Currently around 100 features are described.
The database + software can be accessed free of charge by any academic
with a userid on the UK.AC.DARESBURY.DLVH computer. Application forms
can be obtained by contacting
USER INTERFACE GROUP
SERC DARESBURY LABORATORY
DARESBURY
WARRINGTON
UK WA4 4AD
email UIG at UK.AC.DARESBURY
Tel: (0925) 603351
and asking for SEQNET (DLVH) forms (ask for the ISIS form as well).
I suggest that US folk contact John with questions of availability.
I'll contact this BB once the database is more easily available. It is
annoying that beaurocracy ALWAYS gets in the way :-(
